10 reasons why readers love ebooks

Ebooks aren't about to make printed books extinct; rather, they have expanded the market for books. Here are 10 reasons why ebooks are the fastest growing segment of the publishing market:

  1. They can be downloaded instantly from the comfort of your home. There's no need to go to a bookstore or wait for days after ordering online.
  2. They don't take up shelf space. You can store a whole library of books on a computer or portable USB drive.
  3. They cost less. Ebooks typically cost half (or even less) than a printed version of the same book.
  4. They are easy to travel with. An increasing number of people now take their laptops while travelling. Why take just one or two paperbacks when you can have a choice of dozens of ebooks on your latop?
  5. They don't get old or torn, and are hard to lose. Can you say the same about your hardcopy books?
  6. They don't require you to key in web or email addresses. With ebooks, even the longest and most unwieldy addresses are just a click away.
  7. They can be viewed at a size comfortable to anyone. Text too small? Zoom in. Text too big? Zoom out. It's that simple.
  8. They are searchable. Do you sometimes lose the plot or wonder who a character is? With an ebook, it's as easy as using the Find button to get it all sorted out.
  9. They are interactive. Ebooks can contain audio and video.
  10. They are green. Choosing ebooks over paper options are a way of showing that we care about the environment.

GREENBOOKS FAQs

I have a question…

Is there a standard price list for greenbooks?

Our greenbooks are custom designed, and the price will depend on the specific requirements of a project. Simply email us with details of your project, and we'll be happy to provide you with a quote.

What if I already have a PDF of my book that I want to use?

We can either reformat it for you in landscape format, generally staying true to the existing design, or build interactive elements within your PDF.

I have a PDF of my book/magazine, but there are errors I need to correct or images and ads I need to change. Is this possible?

Most changes can be made, but we may need the source files used to create the document. This would include InDesign or Quark documents, plus fonts and images. We only accept Mac versions of InDesign or Quark files.

A printed version of my book was released mostly in B&W to save on costs. Can I add colour in my ebook version?

Yes, though we will need the supporting files (InDesign or Quark documents, plus fonts and images that aren't being changed).

Who holds the copyright with the greenbook version of my book?

The book copyright remains in the hands of the existing rights holders. The design copyright is retained by A Type of Magic.

Can I add movies and sound files to my greenbook?

Yes, you can. Movie files can be in any of these formats: QuickTime, AVI, MPEG, and SWF. Sound clips must  be in any of these formats:  WAV (non-compressed), AIFF  and AU sound clips.

How do I distribute my greenbooks?

Via your website, through email, on CD or DVD, on USB keys (ask us about personalized USB media options with your company branding).

Add movies and sound files to documents
You can add movies and sound clips to a document, or you can link to streaming video files on the Internet. Although media clips cannot be played directly in the InDesign layout, they can be played when you export the document to Adobe PDF or when you export the document to XML and repurpose the tags.
A poster is the image that represents a media clip. Each movie or sound can appear with or without a poster. If the poster in InDesign is larger than the movie, the poster is clipped to the size of the movie in the exported PDF document.
QuickTime 6.0 or later is required to work with movies in InDesign. You can add QuickTime, AVI, MPEG, and SWF movies, and you can add WAV, AIF, and AU sound clips. InDesign supports only 8‑ or 16‑bit WAV files that are not compressed.
6. The document would include a page explaining how to navigate the document and how to solve the crossword on screen.
